Non-fungible tokens, commonly known as NFTs, have been gaining a lot of attention in the art world recently and it shall not surprise us once we understand this innovation. NFTs are digital assets that are unique and cannot be replicated or replaced. This has made them a popular choice for artists who want to sell their digital artworks and ensure that they maintain ownership and control over their creations.
In this article, we will take a look at some of the most valuable NFT artworks that have been created so far. These artworks showcase the unique capabilities of NFTs and demonstrate how they are changing the art world.
By some measure, the anonymous artist Pak could easily top this list, as his latest offering, “The Merge,” was sold for $91.8 million – not too bad, right? Of course, making a top might be a bit subjective but let’s give it a try. Pak’s $1.44 million sale of “The Switch” and $1.355555 million sale of “The Pixel” at Sotheby’s and Nifty Gateway clocked in at the top of the NFT sales ranking. Due to those high-end sales, Pak is now the world’s most expensive living artist, leaving a bit behind his fellow crypto-art master Beeple.
One of the most notable NFT artworks on the blockchain is “Everydays: The First 5000 Days” by the artist known as Beeple. This artwork is a collection of 5000 digital art pieces that were created by Beeple over a period of 13 years. The entire collection got sold as a single NFT for a record-breaking $69 million in March 2021, making it one of the most expensive artworks ever sold. Another NFT artwork from him is “Human One” which was sold for $29 million (the one from the YouTube video above).
Another notable NFT artwork is “Cryptopunks” by the artist duo known as Larva Labs. “Cryptopunks” NFT is a collection of 10,000 unique digital characters, each with its own unique characteristics and attributes. The collection was one of the first major NFT artworks to be released and was incredibly popular, with some people selling for millions of dollars. By the way, the project and its intellectual property rights were bought by BAYC (Bored Ape Yacht Club) founders or Yuga Labs, to be more specific. They are the first two NFT projects by trading volume now.
Another exciting NFT artwork is “Replicator” by the artist known as Michah Dowbak or under the nickname of Mad Dog Jones. He is a multidisciplinary artist from Thunder Bay, Ontario. “Crossroads” work is an interactive digital world that allows users to explore and interact with the artwork. It combines elements of both gaming and art, allowing end-users to collect and trade unique items worldwide.
An early NFT adopter who has been minting his art as NFT since 2018, XCOPY is a crypto-art pioneer based in London, UK. “Some Asshole” (art shown above) was the first character minted by the artist. Soon after that, a collector, Cozomo de’ Medici, who may or may not actually be the rapper Snoop Dog, made Some Asshole his first purchase on the marketplace, leaving footprints in the early history of NFT art development. Of course, more artworks and artists can be presented but we will leave it for another time.
Overall, NFT artworks are opening up new possibilities for all enthusiasts, from artists to collectors. That is why we got the hype. They allow artists to maintain ownership and control over their creations, and they provide collectors with unique and one-of-a-kind artworks that can be easily traded, bought and sold. These artworks are changing the art world and are likely to continue to be a big force in the industry for years to come.
