Guarding Your Digital Realm: Why DYOR and Due Diligence Are Your Best Defense Against Scams, Hackers, and Impersonators

In today’s interconnected cyber world, information travels at the speed of light, opportunities appear instantly, and unfortunately, so do the dangers. Whether you are exploring new technologies, investing in digital assets, collecting rare items or simply browsing online communities, one principle stands above all others: DYOR – Do Your Own Research. Combined with thorough due diligence, this mindset is your strongest shield against the rising tide of scams, hackers, and sophisticated impersonators.

At ASKNIGHTS.org, we believe wise knowledge is big power. This article equips you with practical insights to navigate the digital landscape safely, protect your assets, and avoid falling victim to the very threats that prey on trust and haste.

What Does DYOR Really Mean in the Cyber World?

DYOR is more than a catchy acronym—it is a disciplined habit. It means never taking someone else’s word at face value, especially when money, personal data, or your digital identity is involved. In the cyber realm, where anonymity is easy and verification can be faked, DYOR translates to:

•  Verifying sources: Cross-check websites, social media accounts, emails, and offers against official channels.

•  Understanding the technology: Learn the basics of blockchain, wallets, encryption, and secure browsing so you can spot red flags.

•  Questioning urgency: Scammers thrive on “limited-time offers” or “act now before it’s gone.” Legitimate opportunities rarely demand immediate action without giving you time to research.

Due diligence takes DYOR one step further. It is the active process of digging deeper: reviewing transaction histories, checking team credentials, reading independent reviews, and testing small before committing big. In short, DYOR gets you curious; due diligence keeps you safe.

The Growing Threat: Scams and Hackers in the Digital Age

Cyber threats have evolved from simple viruses to highly targeted, psychologically sophisticated attacks. Here are some of the most common dangers:

•  Phishing and Social Engineering: Fake emails, messages, or websites that look identical to trusted brands (banks, exchanges, or even communities like ours). They trick you into revealing passwords, seed phrases, or credit card details.

•  Fake Investment or “Get Rich Quick” Schemes: Promises of unrealistic returns on crypto, NFTs, or digital collectibles. Hackers often use compromised accounts or deepfake videos to build false credibility.

•  Malware and Ransomware: Malicious links or downloads that steal data or lock your devices until a ransom is paid.

•  Pump-and-Dump or Rug Pulls: Coordinated hype in online groups followed by sudden crashes, leaving investors with worthless assets.

Hackers don’t need to be technical geniuses anymore—many buy ready-made scam kits on the dark web. The result? Billions lost annually by everyday users who simply clicked the wrong link or trusted the wrong person.

Beware of Impersonators: A Special Warning from ASKNIGHTS

One of the most insidious threats we’re seeing right now is impersonation. Scammers create fake profiles, emails, and social media accounts that mimic legitimate organizations or individuals. They build trust over time, then strike.

We at ASKNIGHTS.org must issue a clear and direct warning: Someone is currently impersonating our team members. These fraudsters claim to work for ASKNIGHTS and present themselves as official “collectors” or representatives scouting for artworks from artists. They are not legitimate. ASKNIGHTS has no official collectors operating in this manner. As NFT, we simply buy listings. Physical art, we buy the way the artists want and prefer. Lots have their own website. Thus, not sure how some people can believe such impersonators who pretend to be collecting art but instead of buying, they are asking for money from artists online. We had received some paintings at our office address in London due to those impersonators and we had to not accept it and let it be shipped back. Then, we explained to the artists the situation and advised them to be more careful and think more about impersonators. In the end, as the International Police also agreed, best thing we can do is to inform and educate others of such actions and scams. Preventing fraud through education is the best way to stay safe online.

If you receive any communication claiming to be from ASKNIGHTS or our team:

•  Check the sender’s email domain (it must end in @asknights.org).

•  Verify through our official website or verified social channels and profiles only.

•  Never share financial data, seed phrases, or bank payment details.

Impersonators exploit the trust our brand and community has built. By staying vigilant, you protect not only yourself but the entire ASKNIGHTS & Partners ecosystem.

Practical Steps to Stay Safe: Your DYOR Checklist

Here’s a simple, actionable framework you can use every time you encounter a new opportunity or message online:

1.  Pause and Verify – Take a breath. Is the offer too good to be true? Google the exact phrasing or company name + “scam” or “review.”

2.  Check Official Channels – Always go back to the verified website or app. Bookmark official links—don’t click those sent in messages.

3.  Use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) – App-based or hardware keys are safer.

4.  Secure Your Wallets – Never share seed phrases. Use hardware wallets for larger holdings. Test small transactions first.

5.  Research the People – For any “expert,” collector, or project lead, look up their history across multiple platforms. Legitimate professionals have verifiable footprints.

6.  Educate Yourself Continuously – Follow reputable cybersecurity sources, join verified communities, and attend webinars.

7.  Report Suspicious Activity – If you spot an impersonator or scam, let us know immediately via our official contact page on ASKNIGHTS.org.

The Bottom Line: Empowerment Through Awareness

The cyber world rewards the wisely prepared and punishes the impulsive. DYOR and due diligence are not just defensive tools—they empower you to make confident, informed decisions and seize genuine opportunities without fear.

At ASKNIGHTS.org, our mission has always been to build a community of knowledgeable, protected knights in the digital realm. By sharing this knowledge, we strengthen every member. Remember: the best defense isn’t paranoia—it’s preparation.
